I stayed at Maria's By The Sea Hotel September 2007, when I visited the island to witness the Miss Caribbean World Pageant. I found the staff at the front desk to be extremly helpful and friendly, and I was even given a room I did not pay for.
I can and would recommend anyone going to Tortola to stay at Maria's, because it is easy to get around from the hotel, and the staff is always willing to give information and to answer questions.
I met the owner. She was a very nice person. Also, I met two of the daughters who work at the hotel, and they were really nice ladies.
I would say stay at Maria's, but make your own judgement, because everyone sees things differently.
Keep up the good work and continue to make your guests happy and comfortable. |

This is a very bare-bones hotel on a beautiful setting. Visited: March 2006 |

I had confirmed reservations for one night prior to a sailboat trip. When I arrived, I was advised that the hotel was full, and they were moving me to another hotel (the Paradise) which was not on the water.
I protested vehemently and they gave me a room and bumped somebody else. My sailboat companions told me the same thing happened the previous year. One of my sailboat companions then got bumped later that night.
The room was clean, but very very plain. The location was beautiful. |

There are other more tourist-friendly hotels on Tortola. Visited: March 2005 |

They screwed up our reservations two years in a row. This year they overbooked and kicked us out just before the Easter weekend.
We found the office staff to be rude and unfriendly. The bar staff couldn't make most drinks, and the ones they made were watered down. Also, the service was very slow. |

I stayed here as the reviews seemed to portray this place as a friendly local place to spend a few days. How wrong can you be?
The staff was downright rude and inconsiderate to me. The smallest of requests were met with indignation. The food was hardly anything to write about (and it was literally thrown at my table by waitresses who do not want to be there). To top it all, they displayed a trophy for hospitality which they won a few years ago.
I recommend you find somewhere else to stay on this otherwise great island! |

We stayed a Maria's for one night only, due to our booking at Peter Island Resort the next day. Since we live in the western USA, it was impossible to get to Peter Island in one day.
After arriving in Tortola, we caught a cab to Maria's, checked into our room which we found large, clean and comfortable. The air conditioning was fairly quiet and perfect to spend the night. We didn't need to bother to set the alarm clock - the local roosters woke us at the crack of dawn.
The next morning we had a very good breakfast, although the service was slow. I just had to remember that things moved at a different pace. I prefered this hotel to the Prospect Reef Resort. |

i've stayed at maria's four or five times on business. the people are nice. however, for the last three years the hotwater hasn't worked on the 3rd floor. "no problem" i'm told, but after three years, i give up. tortola is beautiful. however, no one goes there for the hotels. |

As Yacht Charter Brokers, we are in the islands frequently. We stay at Maria's and find the staff to be friendly and helpful.
Our room is always clean. We love the fact that each room has a small refrigerator so we can keep our beer cold! We also like being within walking distance to the Village Cay Marina, shops, and restaurants. Just please remember - you are in the islands mon, which are very laid back. The staff at times is on "island time" so just relax... they will get to you! |

I have stayed at Maria's twice when down in the islands, and have found the rooms to be spacious, clean and colorful. I have also recommended this waterfront hotel to others who have all been happy with it. It is also close to the business center of Tortola. |

I have stayed at Maria's three times, while in process of building Adagio Villa at Mahoe Bay on Virgin Gorda.
The hotel is very well run, well priced for the level of accomodation and features great views while being close to the commercial centre of Road Town. |

| Maria's Hotel by the Sea is an excellent example of local ingenuity. Owned and operated by Maria, a native Tortolan with 30 years of hotel and dining experience, this once small inn has grown with the times as tourism to the BVI has... |
