Description:
The Jolly Roger Inn and Restaurant is the perfect place to stay if you love lazy
days and active nights. The Inn is located on the water's edge at Soper's Hole, West
End, Tortola, and is best reached by flying into St. Thomas and taking the ferry
to West End. The ride over is delightful. Be sure and sit on the top open-air
deck. You can walk to the Jolly Roger from the ferry dock. If you plan to fly
into Beef Island be prepared for a one-hour expensive taxi ride over bad roads.
The JR, as it is known to locals and the sailing community, is actually a
swinging restaurant and bar, serving very good food for breakfast, lunch and
dinner with moderate prices and Caribbean friendly service. . The rooms are on the second floor and are clean and attractive. They
share a bath. There is a double on the first floor, at the rear, that has its own
bath.
There is a dinghy dock in front of the inn where visiting yachtsmen can tie up
for dinner, etc. The JR has live music several nights a week so don't plan on
getting to bed early on those evenings. The fare ranges from reggae to calypso
to R&B. If you like this Jimmy Buffet style of living, you'll love the JR. Lou
and Kay, the owners, are dynamic and go all out to help you have a fun trip.
KURALU, a 50' catamaran run by Lou's good friend Robin, is available for
wonderful day sails to all of the surrounding islands. Definitely plan on doing
this as a gourmet lunch, snorkeling, swimming and limin' is included.
The JR is casual so bring your shorts, T-shirts, bathing suits and tops.
Remember that the dress code for the BVI is more "covered" than in the French
islands. We always wear long shorts, shirts with sleeves or sundresses when
going to town or out to eat. While there are no beaches in West End, the
North Shore is covered with them. There is a car rental (jeeps mostly) next
door to the JR so you will probably want to rent a vehicle for a part of your
stay. It is actually less expensive to do that than to pay for taxis as the JR is
on the furthermost western tip of the island. Also, some of Tortola's most
beautiful beaches are secluded and remote. You will need a jeep to get there.
The JR is a hangout for local and visiting sailors so you will certainly enjoy the
conversation and ambiance. There are great hiking trails around with superb
vistas so definitely bring your walking shoes. Sage Mountain is close by with
lots of National Park trails as well.
By the time you leave the JR you will know the entire staff by their first names.
The JR is known for its friendly atmosphere, which is why they have a good
repeat business year after year.
